How does your city of the future look?

We, class 4b of the Grundschule am Insulaner in Berlin, did research, conducted surveys, recorded reports, built our own city model, and even spoke with children from Marrakech.

We are class 4b of the Grundschule am Insulaner in Berlin, and we created our very first radio show! We also produced our school newspaper Insulaner News”. In our episode, we talk about childrens rights, the country Morocco, and how cities and communities can become more sustainable — that is, in a way that works well for both people and the environment.

First, we asked ourselves: What do children need to live well? We had many ideas. Then we went out as reporters with a microphone and asked adults on the street: Do they know about children’s rights? And what do they know about Morocco? The answers were sometimes really smart and sometimes quite surprising.

We also prepared our own reports. In them, we explain what children’s rights mean and why they are important for all children around the world. Then we looked at Goal 11 of the 2030 Agenda: How can a city become a place that is good for everyone, with enough space, safe paths, and a protected environment?

And now comes something we especially enjoyed: we built our own dream city as a model! We thought about: Where should parks go? How can children get to school safely? What is needed for sports, play, and leisure? And what helps nature — for example, more trees, less waste, and clean energy?

In this context, we also looked at Morocco and found a great example: the Noor solar power plant. It uses solar energy to produce electricity. And then we had a real highlight: we spoke in a live video conference with children from Marrakech and learned how they live there and what is important to them.

In the end, a radio show was created with presentations, street interviews, reports, and music, as well as our Insulaner News” with lots of information, ideas, and texts from our class. We hope you listen in and enjoy it as much as we did while producing it!
